Wheat and Dairy Free

A wheat and dairy free diet is often necessary to prevent allergic reaction, but many people are eliminating both wheat and dairy in search of better health, too.

Wheat and dairy free diets may help with digestive issues, focus and concentration difficulties, etc. Vegans, of course, eat dairy free as well.

There are many reasons to eliminate these types of foods from your daily life. However, regardless of why someone does so, everyone is in the same boat when it comes to finding appropriate foods, getting the proper nutrition, and coming up with tasteful, simple recipes that fit the wheat and dairy free requirements.

When you first eliminate these products, it may be difficult to find dishes you and your family really enjoy. Here is a rich tasting, wheat and dairy free side dish that you can make and wow your family with.

Baked Beans

5 slices of bacon
1 onion, diced finely
2 (28 ounce) cans of simple baked beans (generic are fine)
3 Tablespoons of molasses
2 Tablespoons of yellow mustard
¼ teaspoon of salt
½ cup of brown sugar
1 Tablespoon of dry mustard
½ cup cooked ham, diced

Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F). Cook bacon and onion in skillet and drain. Crumble bacon. In a casserole dish, combine all ingredients well. Bake covered for one hour. Remove lid and bake for an additional hour. If you prefer, you can cook it in a slow cooker all afternoon on low.

For a great wheat and dairy dessert at your next cookout, try this recipe:

Hot Nutty Apples

Core two granny smith apples, and fill each with one Tablespoon of brown sugar mixed with ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon and chopped walnuts.

Wrap each tightly in aluminum foil and place in the coals of the barbecue after dinner. Bake for ten minutes. Be careful when you unwrap the apples…hot sugar burns!

Going wheat and dairy free definitely requires patience and a little innovation. With practice, however, you can make it easy. Read labels and keep the staples on hand, so you can experiment and come up with your own family favorites.
